Overview

BCG vaccine F-70 is a subcellular fraction derived from the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) Sofia strain (SL222). Unlike traditional live-attenuated BCG vaccines, F-70 is a water-soluble, non-viable preparation containing cellular components of the mycobacteria. It was developed in Bulgaria for use as a non-specific immunotherapeutic agent. In clinical practice, particularly during the late 20th century, it was administered intradermally to patients with superficial bladder cancer to stimulate the systemic immune system, often in conjunction with intravesical instillations of live BCG (such as Calgevax). The preparation aims to induce a robust cellular immune response, activating macrophages and T-lymphocytes to recognize and eliminate malignant cells.
