Overview

BCMA-CAR-T refers to a class of chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies that are genetically engineered to target the B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), a protein highly expressed on malignant plasma cells in multiple myeloma. These therapies involve collecting a patient's own T cells, modifying them ex vivo with a gene encoding a synthetic receptor that recognizes and binds to BCMA, and then reinfusing the modified cells back into the patient. Upon encountering BCMA-expressing tumor cells, these engineered T-cells become activated and mediate targeted cytotoxicity against the cancerous plasma cells. The approach has shown significant efficacy in relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma and is considered transformative for patients who have failed standard treatments[1][3][5].
