Overview

BCMA CAR T-cell therapy is a modality of adoptive cell immunotherapy where a patient's T-cells are genetically engineered to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) that specifically targets the B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), also known as TNFRSF17. BCMA is highly and selectively expressed on the surface of malignant plasma cells in multiple myeloma, making it an ideal therapeutic target. Upon infusion, these engineered T-cells recognize and bind to BCMA-expressing cells, leading to T-cell activation, expansion, and the targeted destruction of the cancer cells. This class of therapy has significantly improved outcomes for patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma.
