Overview

BCMA CAR-T cell therapy is a class of autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies designed to target B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), a protein highly expressed on the surface of malignant plasma cells in multiple myeloma. The process involves collecting a patient's T cells, genetically engineering them to express a CAR that recognizes BCMA, expanding them ex vivo, and re-infusing them into the patient. Once infused, these engineered T cells identify and eliminate BCMA-expressing cancer cells. This modality has revolutionized the treatment landscape for relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, with two FDA-approved products: idecabtagene vicleucel (Abecma) and ciltacabtagene autoleucel (Carvykti). Numerous other candidates are currently in clinical development for multiple myeloma and other B-cell malignancies.
