BCMA CAR-T cells represent a class of adoptive cell therapies where a patient's T cells are genetically engineered to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) that specifically recognizes and binds to B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA). BCMA is a protein highly expressed on the surface of malignant plasma cells in multiple myeloma. Upon infusion, these modified T cells identify and destroy BCMA-expressing cancer cells, offering a targeted approach to treating relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. This therapy has shown significant clinical efficacy, leading to remissions in patients who have exhausted other treatment options, although challenges such as antigen escape and CAR-T cell persistence remain areas of ongoing research.
