Overview

BCMA-targeted CAR T-cell therapy is a class of autologous cell-based immunotherapies designed to treat B-cell malignancies, most notably multiple myeloma. The therapy involves extracting a patient's T-cells via leukapheresis, genetically engineering them to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) that recognizes the B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), and re-infusing the modified cells into the patient. BCMA is a cell surface receptor highly and selectively expressed on mature B lymphocytes and malignant plasma cells, making it an ideal target for multiple myeloma. Once re-infused, these CAR T-cells expand and specifically target and destroy BCMA-expressing cancer cells. Currently, two such therapies, idecabtagene vicleucel (Abecma) and ciltacabtagene autoleucel (Carvykti), have received FDA approval for relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma.
