BD211 is a gene-modified autologous hematopoietic stem cell therapy developed for the treatment of transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT). The therapy involves collecting a patient’s own CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells, which are then transduced ex vivo with a lentiviral vector encoding the human βA-T87Q-globin gene. After myeloablative conditioning, these modified cells are infused back into the patient to enable production of healthy β-globin in red blood cells. Early clinical studies have shown successful engraftment and sustained transfusion independence in treated patients, with no unexpected safety issues observed. BD211 is being developed by Shanghai BDgene Therapeutics and is currently in Phase 1 clinical trials for TDT[1][5][7].
