BDS-I (Blood Depressing Substance I) is a 43-amino acid peptide toxin originally isolated from the sea anemone *Actinia equina*. It is a potent and selective blocker of the voltage-gated potassium channel Kv3.4 (encoded by the KCNC4 gene). In oncological research, particularly concerning cervical cancer, BDS-I is used to investigate the role of Kv3.4 in cellular proliferation and metabolic activity. Research indicates that BDS-I treatment can selectively reduce the metabolic activity of HPV-transfected keratinocytes, suggesting that Kv3.4 is a viable therapeutic target and biomarker for early HPV-mediated cervical carcinogenesis. While primarily known for its affinity for Kv3.x channels, BDS-I has also demonstrated inhibitory effects on certain voltage-gated sodium channels, such as Nav1.7, at higher concentrations.
