Overview

BE-17 is a microbiome-based feed additive in development by BiomEdit, specifically designed to reduce enteric methane emissions in ruminants such as beef cattle and dairy cows. As a product within BiomEdit's 'Foundational' category, it leverages the company's expertise in microbiome innovation—a platform spun out from Elanco Animal Health and Ginkgo Bioworks. The development of BE-17 is supported by a $4.5 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, awarded in November 2023, aimed at mitigating the environmental impact of livestock production. The product is currently in the preclinical stage, focusing on candidate optimization to effectively modulate rumen fermentation and inhibit methanogenesis.
