Overview

BEA 2180 (also referred to as BEA 2180 BR) is an investigational anticholinergic agent developed for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It acts as a bronchodilator and has been evaluated in clinical trials for its efficacy and safety in improving lung function, reducing symptoms and exacerbations, and enhancing health status in patients with COPD. In comparative studies, BEA 2180 demonstrated noninferiority to tiotropium regarding improvements in forced expiratory volume (FEV1) and symptom scores. The drug was generally well tolerated across studied doses[1][4]. Pharmacokinetic studies have also been conducted to assess its metabolism and tolerability in healthy volunteers[2]. Boehringer Ingelheim is the developer and manufacturer. The mechanism of action is antagonism of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor.
