Overview
Cystinol akut is a herbal medicinal product developed by Schaper & Brümmer for the treatment of acute inflammatory diseases of the lower urinary tract, such as cystitis. The active ingredient is a dry extract of bearberry leaves (*Arctostaphylos uva-ursi*), standardized to its arbutin content. Arbutin acts as a prodrug; after oral ingestion, it is absorbed and metabolized in the liver to hydroquinone conjugates. These conjugates are excreted via the kidneys into the urine. In the presence of a urinary tract infection, bacterial enzymes (such as β-glucosidase) or the alkaline environment of the urine can release free hydroquinone, which exhibits potent antibacterial properties against common uropathogens like *E. coli*. Additionally, the extract possesses anti-inflammatory properties that help alleviate the symptoms of burning and frequent urination, often serving as an alternative to antibiotics for uncomplicated infections.
