Overview

Bebtelovimab is a recombinant human IgG1 monoclonal antibody that targets the spike (S) protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. It binds specifically to an epitope on the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein, overlapping with the ACE2-interacting site, thereby blocking viral entry into host cells. Bebtelovimab was developed for intravenous administration in non-hospitalized patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at high risk for progression to severe disease and when other treatment options are not available or appropriate. The drug demonstrated broad neutralizing activity against multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Delta and Omicron; however, its emergency use authorization was revoked in November 2022 due to loss of efficacy against newer Omicron subvariants[1][4][5][6].
