BEC2 is an anti-idiotypic mouse monoclonal antibody that mimics the GD3 ganglioside, a molecule expressed on the surface of tumor cells of neuroectodermal origin. It was developed as a vaccine to induce an immune response against GD3-positive tumors by stimulating the production of anti-GD3 antibodies. Clinical trials have evaluated BEC2 in combination with bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) as an adjuvant therapy for cancers such as melanoma and limited-disease small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). While immunization with BEC2/BCG can induce humoral responses in some patients, large phase III studies did not demonstrate improved survival or progression-free survival compared to observation alone[1][2][3][4]. The vaccine is administered intradermally or intravenously and has been studied both alone and conjugated to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) to enhance immunogenicity[1].
