Overview

Becaplermin is a recombinant form of human platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), specifically the B chain homodimer (PDGF-BB), produced using recombinant DNA technology in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)[3][7][8]. It is used topically as a gel to treat lower extremity diabetic neuropathic ulcers that extend into subcutaneous tissue, provided there is adequate blood supply[1][2][4][5]. Becaplermin acts by binding to the beta platelet-derived growth factor receptor, stimulating chemotactic recruitment and proliferation of cells involved in wound repair, and enhancing granulation tissue formation[3][6][8]. Its mechanism accelerates healing by promoting cellular migration and division at the ulcer site. Becaplermin was approved by the FDA in December 1997 for this indication[6].
