beclometasone dipropionate

Beclazone is a brand name for beclometasone dipropionate, a synthetic glucocorticoid and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) used for the maintenance treatment of asthma. Developed and marketed by Teva UK Ltd, Beclazone was formulated as a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) using chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants. The drug acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, exerting potent anti-inflammatory effects in the lungs to reduce airway hyperresponsiveness and prevent asthma exacerbations. It was available in multiple strengths, including 50, 100, 200, and 250 mcg. Beclazone was discontinued in March 2010 as part of the global industry-wide phase-out of CFC-containing medicinal products, transitioning patients to CFC-free alternatives such as hydrofluoroalkane (HFA)-propelled formulations like Qvar. Clinical studies, including Phase 3 crossover trials in pre-pubertal children, utilized Beclazone as a comparator to assess the systemic effects and safety profiles (such as lower leg growth velocity measured by knemometry) of newer HFA-based inhalers.
