Beclomethasone-CFC refers to the chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)-propelled formulation of beclomethasone dipropionate, a synthetic corticosteroid used primarily as an inhaled maintenance therapy for asthma. The drug acts as a prodrug, rapidly converted in the body to its active metabolite, beclomethasone 17-monopropionate (17-BMP), which binds with high affinity to the human glucocorticoid receptor. This binding leads to potent anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting inflammatory cells such as mast cells, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils and suppressing the release of mediators like histamine and leukotrienes[1][2][5]. The CFC formulation was widely used before being replaced by hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellants due to environmental concerns over ozone depletion[5]. Beclomethasone-CFC is indicated for long-term prevention of bronchospasm in asthma and has also been studied for use in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)[3].
