This combination therapy consists of beclomethasone dipropionate, a synthetic corticosteroid, and salbutamol (also known as albuterol), a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist, diluted in 0.9% normal saline for nebulized administration. It was evaluated in a clinical trial conducted at Mardan Medical Complex in Pakistan for the treatment of acute bronchiolitis in infants aged 3-12 months. Beclomethasone dipropionate acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, reducing airway edema and mucus production, while salbutamol acts as a bronchodilator by stimulating beta-2 receptors in the airway smooth muscle to induce relaxation. The trial compared this combination (Group B) to 3% hypertonic saline nebulization (Group A) and found that the steroid-bronchodilator combination was less effective in reducing the duration of hospital stay and the severity of bronchiolitis symptoms.
