Overview

Bee venom phospholipase A2 (bvPLA2) is a major enzymatic component of honeybee (*Apis mellifera*) venom that functions as both a lipolytic enzyme and a potent immunomodulator. It primarily exerts its therapeutic effects by binding to the CD206 mannose receptor on dendritic cells, which triggers the expansion of CD4+ CD25+ Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) via the PGE2-EP2 signaling pathway. Additionally, bvPLA2 has been shown to inhibit the STAT3 signaling pathway, reduce neuroinflammation, and modulate microglial activation. A standardized, fortified formulation known as New Composition Bee Venom (NCBV) is currently in Phase 1 development for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, while the purified enzyme is being investigated for Parkinson's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, and various inflammatory disorders.
