Overview
Beeswax breast pads (also referred to as beeswax mammary areolae) are a non-pharmaceutical intervention used to support breastfeeding mothers. Developed and studied by researchers at the University of Alicante, these pads are applied topically to the nipple and areola to prevent and treat lesions such as cracks and fissures. The beeswax provides a natural emollient effect and creates a physical barrier that protects the skin from friction and moisture loss, thereby reducing pain and improving adherence to exclusive breastfeeding. Clinical trials have evaluated their use in combination with health education programs for primiparous women to improve breastfeeding success rates and maternal quality of life.
