Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Beet root extract is a dietary supplement derived from the root of the *Beta vulgaris* plant, also known as beetroot or red beet. It contains high concentrations of bioactive compounds such as betalains (including betanin), dietary nitrate, phenolics, and betaine. The primary mechanisms of action proposed for beet root extract include strong antioxidant activity (scavenging free radicals), anti-inflammatory effects (reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators), and vasoprotective effects via dietary nitrate enhancement of nitric oxide generation. These properties may help reduce oxidative stress, lower blood pressure by vasodilation, support cardiovascular health, improve exercise performance, and provide liver-protective and anti-tumor effects. While preclinical and some small clinical studies suggest additional benefits—including lowering blood lipids, protecting the liver and kidneys, aiding glucose metabolism, and possibly supporting cognitive function—large-scale clinical evidence is still limited, and most uses are as a food supplement or functional food rather than a pharmaceutical drug[4][1][3][5][2].
