Belerofon

Belerofon is a next-generation recombinant interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) variant developed by Nautilus Biotech for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. It is engineered with a single amino acid substitution that renders the protein resistant to protease-mediated degradation while maintaining its full antiviral potency. This modification results in a significantly improved pharmacokinetic profile and a longer half-life compared to native or pegylated interferons. A key innovation of the Belerofon program was the development of an oral enteric-coated tablet formulation, alongside a traditional injectable form, aimed at improving patient compliance and reducing the side effects associated with parenteral interferon administration.
