Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Belladonna total alkaloids is a mixture of tropane alkaloids extracted from the *Atropa belladonna* plant, typically comprising l-hyoscyamine, atropine, and scopolamine. These alkaloids act as competitive antagonists at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, thereby inhibiting the action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the parasympathetic nervous system. This results in reduced smooth muscle motility and decreased glandular secretions. The mixture is primarily used as an antispasmodic agent for the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, spastic colitis, and enterocolitis. Inga Pharmaceuticals is a major manufacturer and supplier of this pharmaceutical-grade API.
