Overview

Bellafoline is a pharmaceutical preparation containing the levorotatory alkaloids of the belladonna plant, with l-hyoscyamine being the principal active component. It functions as a potent anticholinergic agent by competitively inhibiting muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. Historically developed by Sandoz, Bellafoline has been utilized for its antispasmodic and antisecretory properties in treating gastrointestinal disorders and as an adjunct in the management of migraine headaches. In the context of migraine, it is often combined with ergotamine and caffeine (as in Cafergot PB) to alleviate autonomic symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. While its use has diminished with the advent of more selective therapies, it remains a classic example of a belladonna-derived therapeutic.
