Overview

Belotero is an injectable dermal filler composed of cross-linked hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that binds water and provides volume and hydration. It is designed to integrate smoothly into the skin tissue for natural-looking results without disrupting facial contours or expressions. The product line includes various formulations (such as Belotero Balance, Soft, and Volume) tailored for different depths and types of wrinkles or volume loss. Once injected into the mid-to-deep dermis (depending on formulation), it instantly fills lines and wrinkles—most commonly nasolabial folds—and can also be used to restore facial volume in areas like cheeks, lips, under-eye hollows (tear troughs), and fine perioral lines. The effects are temporary; results typically last from 6 to 18 months depending on product type and treatment area[1][2][4][5][7]. Most formulations contain lidocaine for patient comfort during injection[6][7]. Belotero was first approved by the FDA in 2011 for correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles such as nasolabial folds[2][7][8]. It is manufactured using a proprietary process that produces a smooth gel with high tissue integration properties—minimizing risks like lumpiness or bluish discoloration (Tyndall effect) even in thin-skinned areas[5].
