Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BEMA buprenorphine is a buccal film formulation of the partial μ‑opioid receptor agonist buprenorphine hydrochloride that uses BioDelivery Sciences’ BioErodible MucoAdhesive (BEMA) technology to deliver the drug across the buccal mucosa for long‑acting analgesia in chronic pain.[1][2][6][13][15] Buprenorphine provides potent analgesic activity with a ceiling effect on respiratory and central nervous system depression relative to full μ‑agonists, and also exhibits κ‑opioid receptor antagonism and δ‑opioid receptor agonism.[5][13] Developed by BioDelivery Sciences and Endo Pharmaceuticals, the product (marketed as Belbuca) is indicated for the management of severe chronic pain requiring continuous, around‑the‑clock opioid therapy when alternative treatments are inadequate, and is supplied in multiple strengths to enable individualized titration.[2][4][6][7][11][13]
