BEMA Lactic Acid

BEMA LA is a bioerodible mucoadhesive (BEMA) film formulation of lactic acid developed by BioDelivery Sciences International for the treatment of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC). The product utilizes a proprietary delivery technology consisting of a small, flexible, multi-layered polymer film that adheres to the vaginal mucosa and dissolves over time to provide a controlled release of lactic acid. The primary mechanism of action is the restoration and maintenance of a healthy, acidic vaginal pH (typically below 4.5), which is essential for inhibiting the overgrowth of *Candida* species and other opportunistic pathogens. By providing a sustained release of the active ingredient, BEMA LA was intended to offer a more convenient and effective alternative to traditional vaginal creams or suppositories. The drug reached Phase 2 clinical trials, demonstrating safety and efficacy in reducing the recurrence of vaginal fungal infections, but development was eventually discontinued as the company shifted its strategic focus toward its opioid and pain management portfolio.
