Overview

Bemegride is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant and respiratory stimulant that was first synthesized in 1911. It has been primarily used as an antidote for barbiturate poisoning and to induce convulsions in experimental animals. Its mechanism of action involves antagonism of the GABAA receptor, suppressing both GABA-induced and pentobarbitone-induced currents, thereby counteracting CNS depression caused by barbiturates. Historically marketed under several brand names including Megimide and Eukraton, bemegride is classified chemically as a piperidinedione derivative[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
