Overview

Bemiparin is a second-generation, ultra-low molecular weight heparin (ultra-LMWH) anticoagulant derived from porcine unfractionated heparin. It has an average molecular weight of 3600 daltons and is characterized by a high anti-factor Xa to anti-factor IIa activity ratio (8:1). Bemiparin acts primarily by binding to antithrombin III, which enhances the inactivation of activated factor X (factor Xa), thereby inhibiting thrombin formation and reducing blood clot formation. Its selectivity for factor Xa results in lower risk of bleeding compared to traditional low molecular weight heparins. Bemiparin is approved for the prevention of venous thromboembolism after surgery, treatment of deep vein thrombosis with or without pulmonary embolism, and prevention of clotting during extracorporeal circulation in dialysis. It also promotes greater release of tissue factor pathway inhibitor than other LMWHs or unfractionated heparin. Ongoing research explores its potential use in tumors and diabetic foot ulcers[1][2][4][6].
