Benapenem is a novel parenteral carbapenem antibiotic belonging to the beta-lactam class, developed for the treatment of severe bacterial infections. It exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacteria, including extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Gram-negative and anaerobic organisms. Benapenem acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and leading to cell lysis and death. Its pharmacokinetic profile features a relatively long serum half-life (~7 hours), making it suitable for once-daily intravenous administration.
