Bendroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic used primarily to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and edema (fluid retention). It works by inhibiting the sodium-chloride symporter in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron in the kidney, leading to increased excretion of sodium and water. This diuretic effect reduces fluid volume in tissues and blood vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure and reducing swelling. Bendroflumethiazide also causes vasodilation by activating calcium-activated potassium channels in vascular smooth muscle and may increase prostacyclin biosynthesis, further contributing to its antihypertensive effects. The drug was patented in 1958 and approved for medical use in 1960[1][2][6][7][8].
