Centyl med Kaliumklorid is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product containing the thiazide diuretic bendroflumethiazide and the electrolyte supplement potassium chloride. Bendroflumethiazide acts by inhibiting the sodium-chloride cotransporter (NCC) in the distal convoluted tubule of the kidney, which increases the excretion of sodium, chloride, and water, thereby reducing blood pressure and alleviating edema. Potassium chloride is included in the formulation to counteract the kaliuretic effect of the thiazide, preventing or treating hypokalemia, a common side effect of prolonged diuretic therapy. While primarily indicated for hypertension and edema related to heart failure, the combination is also being investigated in the Phase 2 BONATHIAD trial by Aalborg University for its potential to preserve bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, leveraging the thiazide's ability to reduce urinary calcium excretion.
