Benesco

Benesco is an over-the-counter nutritional supplement formulated as a lozenge containing 200 mg of quercetin, a natural flavonoid. It was developed as a natural alternative to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and associated reflux symptoms. The mechanism of action is hypothesized to involve the enhancement of esophageal barrier function, potentially by strengthening tight junctions and providing anti-inflammatory effects. Clinical research, including a Phase 4 double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted at Amsterdam UMC and supported by Thelial BV, investigated its efficacy over a 6-week period. However, the trial results indicated that Benesco did not provide a significant benefit over placebo for the relief of reflux symptoms at the group level.
