Overview

Benjakul is a traditional Thai herbal formulation composed of five specific plant parts: the fruit of *Piper chaba* (Thai: Di-pli), the root of *Piper sarmentosum* (Cha-phlu), the fruit of *Piper nigrum* (Phrik-thai), the root of *Plumbago indica* (Chet-ta-mun-phloeng-daeng), and the rhizome of *Zingiber officinale* (Khing). It is a fundamental preparation in Thai traditional medicine, historically utilized to balance the body's four elements and treat gastrointestinal ailments such as flatulence, dyspepsia, and indigestion. Modern pharmacological research has characterized Benjakul as having significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and potential antineoplastic properties. The formula is officially recognized in the Thai National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM). Its therapeutic effects are attributed to the synergistic action of phytochemicals like piperine, plumbagin, and gingerols, which modulate inflammatory pathways including the inhibition of COX-2 and iNOS expression.
