Overview

Benmoxin is an irreversible and nonselective monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) of the hydrazine class. It was first synthesized in 1967 and was used as an antidepressant in Europe, but it is no longer marketed. As a nonselective MAOI, benmoxin inhibits both MAO-A and MAO-B enzymes, leading to increased levels of monoamine neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the brain. This mechanism underlies its antidepressant effects[1][2][3][4][8].
