Overview

Benomyl is a systemic benzimidazole fungicide introduced in 1968 by DuPont, primarily used to control a wide range of fungal diseases in crops and ornamentals. Its fungicidal mechanism is based on disruption of tubulin polymerization, thereby inhibiting microtubule formation and arresting fungal cell division. Benomyl is moderately persistent and rapidly degrades to carbendazim (MBC), another fungicidal compound, after application. In addition to its intended effects, benomyl exposure can induce oxidative stress, apoptosis in neural cells, teratogenicity, reproductive and hepatic toxicity in mammals, and is classified as a possible carcinogen by regulatory agencies. Its use is restricted or banned in the US/EU due to these toxicity concerns, but remains common in developing countries[1][3][5][7][9].
