Overview

Bentonite is a naturally occurring absorbent aluminum phyllosilicate clay primarily composed of montmorillonite. It is used in medicine as an adsorbent and bulk-forming laxative, and as a base for dermatologic formulations. Its primary mechanism of action is physical adsorption—bentonite binds toxins, drugs (such as aflatoxins), pesticides, and other substances in the gastrointestinal tract or on the skin surface due to its high cation exchange capacity and large surface area. This reduces their bioavailability or facilitates their removal from the body[1][3][5]. In clinical use, it has been studied for preventing aflatoxin toxicity and treating poisonings by acting as a non-specific adsorbent[3]. It is also widely marketed for detoxification purposes and topical applications such as acne treatment or poison ivy exposure[2][5]. However, some commercial bentonite products have been found to contain elevated levels of lead that may pose health risks if ingested or applied topically[4][7].
