Benzamidine

Benzamidine is a small molecule serine protease inhibitor primarily used to relieve painful and inflammatory conditions of the oral cavity, such as infections and gingivitis. It acts as a reversible competitive inhibitor of trypsin, trypsin-like enzymes, thrombin, plasmin, and other serine proteases. Benzamidine is also widely used in biochemical research to prevent proteolytic degradation during protein purification and crystallography. Its mechanism involves inhibition of serine protease activity by binding to the active site of these enzymes[1][3][5]. The compound has also been studied for antiviral effects in derivatives against influenza virus infection[6].
