Benzathine penicillin

Benzathine penicillin (also known as benzylpenicillin or penicillin G) is a long-acting beta-lactam antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including strep throat, diphtheria, syphilis, and yaws. It is also indicated for the prevention of rheumatic fever and related complications. The drug works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to and blocking the activity of transpeptidase enzymes (penicillin-binding proteins), resulting in bactericidal action. The addition of the benzathine component allows for slow release from the injection site, providing prolonged therapeutic levels with intramuscular administration[1][2][5][6]. Benzathine penicillin is not effective against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria[6].
