Overview

Benzethidine is a synthetic opioid analgesic of the 4-phenylpiperidine class, structurally related to pethidine (meperidine). It acts as a mu-opioid receptor agonist and produces typical opioid effects such as analgesia, sedation, nausea, and respiratory depression. Despite its pharmacological activity, benzethidine has never been used clinically due to safety concerns and high abuse potential. It is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States and under similar restrictions internationally; this means it has no accepted medical use and carries a high risk for abuse[1][2][5]. The compound was investigated experimentally but was ultimately forbidden for use[7].
