Benzhydrocodone is an opioid prodrug of the morphinan class, used in combination with acetaminophen for the short-term management of acute pain severe enough to require an opioid analgesic and where alternative treatments are inadequate. It is available under the brand name Apadaz. Benzhydrocodone itself has no pharmacological activity until it is rapidly metabolized by intestinal enzymes to hydrocodone, which acts as a full agonist at mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system to produce analgesia. The drug is indicated for use in patients who have not responded adequately to non-opioid pain medications and should be used for no more than 14 days due to risks of dependence and abuse. Benzhydrocodone/acetaminophen was developed as an immediate-release formulation with some abuse-deterrent properties[1][3][5][6].
