Overview

Benzhydroxamic acid is a small molecule organic compound with the formula C7H7NO2. It belongs to the class of hydroxamic acids, which are known for their metal-chelating properties. Benzhydroxamic acid and its derivatives have been studied primarily as experimental agents rather than approved pharmaceuticals. They are notable for their ability to form complexes with metals and have demonstrated biological activities including anti-bacterial effects (notably against Helicobacter pylori) and antitumor activity in preclinical studies[2][3][5][6]. Benzhydroxamic acid-based compounds are also recognized as histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, particularly targeting zinc-dependent HDACs such as HDAC6 and HDAC8, making them of interest in cancer research[3]. Additionally, novel derivatives have shown promising anthelmintic activity against parasitic nematodes[5]. The compound is used in chemical synthesis and analytical chemistry but has not been approved for clinical use.
