Overview

Benzocaine is a local anesthetic of the amino ester class used primarily as a topical agent for the temporary relief of pain and itching associated with minor burns (including sunburn), insect bites or stings, poison ivy/oak/sumac exposure, minor cuts or scratches. It is also used to numb mucous membranes during certain medical procedures. Benzocaine works by diffusing into nerve cells and binding to voltage-gated sodium channels on neuronal membranes. This action prevents sodium influx required for depolarization and propagation of nerve impulses—thereby blocking sensation in the area where it is applied[1][2][5]. Its onset is rapid but duration short (about 10 minutes). Benzocaine does not cause unconsciousness like general anesthetics[2]. It has been widely available over-the-counter in various forms such as gels/jellies/creams/ointments/liquids/sprays[2][4]. The drug carries a risk of methemoglobinemia—a rare but serious blood disorder—and should not be used in children under 2 years old due to this risk[1][4].
