Overview

Benzocaine + phenazone is a topical otic combination drug used for the symptomatic relief of ear pain associated with acute otitis media. It consists of benzocaine, a local anesthetic that acts by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels to numb nerve endings, and phenazone (also known as antipyrine), an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent that inhibits prostaglandin synthesis. The formulation is typically an oil-based solution administered directly into the ear canal. It has been evaluated in clinical trials, such as the CEDAR (Children's Ear Pain Study) coordinated by the University of Bristol, to determine its efficacy in reducing antibiotic use and providing rapid pain relief in children with ear infections. While available over the counter in Australia and New Zealand, its availability varies in other regions.
