Overview

Benzoctamine is a small molecule psychotropic drug with sedative and anxiolytic properties. Unlike most sedatives, it does not depress the respiratory system; instead, it may stimulate respiration. It is primarily used for the treatment of anxiety disorders and has demonstrated efficacy comparable to chlordiazepoxide and diazepam in clinical studies. Benzoctamine also exhibits antidepressant effects and can be used in mood disorders such as depression. Its mechanism of action involves modulation of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system—specifically decreasing serotonin (5-HT) turnover—which likely contributes to its anxiolytic effect. The drug has been shown to reduce plasma corticosteroid hormone levels associated with stress and anxiety[1][2][3][4][5].
