benzoin resin

Benzoin resin is a natural balsamic resin obtained from the bark of several species of trees in the genus *Styrax*, primarily *Styrax benzoin* and *Styrax tonkinensis*. It is produced as a pathologic exudate in response to bark injury. The resin is chemically complex, containing balsamic acid esters (such as benzyl benzoate), benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, and various triterpenoids. Historically used as incense and a flavoring agent, it has significant therapeutic applications as a topical antiseptic and protectant. It is commonly formulated as Compound Benzoin Tincture to treat minor skin irritations, wounds, and ulcers.
