Overview

Benzoxonium is a quaternary ammonium compound used as an antiseptic with antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal (antimycotic) activity. It is primarily indicated for skin disinfection, prevention of infections, and disinfection of mucous membranes and instruments. Benzoxonium chloride is also used in the treatment of mouth and throat infections (such as gingivitis, mouth ulcers, and other oral infections), often administered as lozenges or topical preparations. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the growth of microorganisms by disrupting their cell membranes[1][2][4][7].
