Benzoyl peroxide is a small molecule organic compound used primarily as a topical treatment for mild to moderate acne vulgaris and sometimes rosacea. It acts as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent by generating free radicals that are directly toxic to *Cutibacterium acnes* (formerly *Propionibacterium acnes*) and other skin bacteria. This mechanism reduces bacterial load without promoting antibiotic resistance. Additionally, benzoyl peroxide helps remove dead skin cells (keratolytic effect), decreases sebum production around follicles by increasing epithelial cell turnover and has a mild drying effect on the skin. It is available over-the-counter in various formulations including creams, gels, lotions and washes at concentrations typically ranging from 2.5% to 10%.
