Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Benzoyl peroxide + doxycycline is a combination therapy involving the topical application of benzoyl peroxide and the oral (or in some cases topical) administration of doxycycline. Benzoyl peroxide is an antimicrobial and keratolytic agent that works by releasing free oxygen radicals that oxidize bacterial proteins and decreasing comedones through skin exfoliation. Doxycycline is a tetracycline-class antibiotic primarily used in acne for its anti-inflammatory effects and secondary antibacterial effect against Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes). This combination is used for the treatment of moderate to severe acne vulgaris to improve efficacy and reduce the risk of developing antibiotic resistance, as benzoyl peroxide decreases the likelihood of resistant bacterial strains when used alongside antibiotics[1][3][4][6].
