Benzphetamine

Benzphetamine is a sympathomimetic amine and amphetamine-type stimulant prescribed for the short-term management of exogenous obesity as an adjunct to a regimen of weight reduction based on caloric restriction. It is indicated for patients with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher who have not responded to diet and exercise alone. The drug functions as an appetite suppressant by stimulating the central nervous system. Its mechanism of action involves promoting the release of norepinephrine and dopamine from nerve terminals in the lateral hypothalamic feeding center, thereby reducing appetite and slightly increasing metabolism. Benzphetamine is also a prodrug that is metabolized into dextromethamphetamine and dextroamphetamine. It is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance in the United States due to its potential for misuse and dependence.
