Benzthiazide

Benzthiazide is a thiazide diuretic used primarily for the treatment of hypertension and edema. It acts by inhibiting the sodium-chloride symporter (Na⁺/Cl⁻ cotransporter) in the distal convoluted tubule of the kidney, leading to increased excretion of sodium and chloride ions. This results in enhanced water loss (diuresis), reduction in blood volume, and subsequently lower blood pressure. Benzthiazide also causes potassium loss via increased exchange with sodium and can increase serum uric acid levels. Its antihypertensive effect may also involve vasodilation through activation of large-conductance calcium-activated potassium channels in vascular smooth muscle and inhibition of carbonic anhydrases within vascular tissue. The drug was developed by Pfizer and marketed under several brand names but is no longer available in some markets such as the United States[1][2][5][6][7].
